KEV SHIELDS
scottish climber with nerves of steel

Kev Shields was born 1978 in Ayrshire. He began climbing late
in life at 22 after being diagnosed with epilepsy in addition to
having to cope with the challenge of having only one hand.
"I never enjoyed any mainstream sports or liked anything with
too many set rules. That's why I love trying to climb hard as a
disabled person as it feels like I'm writing my own rules as I go.
Especially with soloing I get to explore my physical and mental
capabilities without some desk jockey telling me what I can and
can't do or have Health and Safety turn up...
My ambitions are to keep pushing my own limits; to climb E7
and Scottish X1/11."
KEV's achievements include
- Numerous new routes up to E5 solo
- 1st ascent of 'Lovely Biscuits' WI5 Cogne Valley Italy
- 1st ascent of 'something in the water' White cliffs of dover C9+
- Solo of Fast & Furious M10+ Newtyle Quarry
- Winner Mixed Masters comp 2006
- 1st disabled athlete to enter Ice World Cup
